Kohlrabi
Kohlrabi is a relatively new face in Bangladesh's winter vegetable market — Insaf's Quick Boss variety is available.
Kohlrabi is low in calories and a good source of fiber and vitamin C. It's the swollen round stem that's eaten as the vegetable.
Growing it in Bangladesh
- Sowing time
- Quick Boss is sown from August to November, and the first bulbs are ready for harvest 30–35 days after transplanting.
- Weather & soil
- Kohlrabi prefers cool weather and loose, well-drained soil, making the winter (rabi) season its best growing window. In hot weather the stem can quickly turn woody and fibrous.
- Care
- Harvest the stem while it's still small and tender — left too long, it turns fibrous
- Spacing plants well helps the stem swell properly
- Water regularly, but never let water stand at the base of the plant
- Keeping the bed weed-free helps the plant stay healthy
